How I started this photoblog

My name is Miro Bartanus, I am experienced software architect, consultant, project manager and managing director at Dynatech Ltd., company focused on development software and web applications. I live and work in Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia.

I started make photos from a child, when I shot with Russian Smena 8M and developed in darkroom from mother's bathroom. It started to be more fun on a high school, where I get in touch to SLR cameras in school's photoclub. We shot BW on Foma, Orwo and sometimes on Agfa material.

I completly skip colour film and after a pause I bought quite cute toy, 3Mpx HP PhotoSmart 735. Although it was not so powerful camera for other but family photos, I recalled my hobby and started to approach photography more seriously. I read a couple of nice books and the breakthrough occured when I purchased Nikon D70s.

After while I found, that my harddisk is accumulatig more and more photos, that I'd like to show to somebody, discuss about them with someone or hear some criticism about them. I was quite surprised, when I found that there are lot of similar individuals in my "internet neighbourhood" and they publish unexpectly good photos on various photo community servers.

I engaged too, and after I tried more servers I decided to develop my own page. I found pre-cooked system that I customized to my needs. And this is the system you are just looking at :)

Love Is All Around

This photoblog's title Light Is All Around is a variation of title of Love Is All Around, a song composed by Reg Presley, a frontman of The Troggs band. The song was later covered by Wet Wet Wet as soundtrack to film Four Weddings and a Funeral.

This is the original version. Note, how good LIGHT IS ALL AROUND inside the wagon in the video, isn't it? :)))

One last link for collectors to R.E.M. version. For some people is this, umplugged version simply the best. I prefer the original from 60s personaly.

My gear

Currently I use:
  • Nikon D70s
  • 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G IF-ED AF-S VR DX Zoom-Nikkor
  • Tokina AF AT-X124 PRO DX 12~24mm F4
  • 50mm f/1.8D AF Nikkor
  • Nikon SB-400 Speedlight
  • Nikon ML-L3
  • Hoya HMC 77mm PL-CIR
  • B+W UV Filter 72mm MRC SLIM
  • Hama 72 <-> 77
  • Cokin P, 121M, 153
  • CF Lexar Professional 2GB 133x Wa
  • Tripod UNOMAT SVA950
Gear I worked with in past: 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5G IF-ED AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor, Soligor CPL 67mm, B+W UV Filter 67mm MRC, HP PhotoSmart 735, Practica B, Pentacon SIX, Zenit ET, Helios-44-2 2/58mm, Minolta Hi-Matic F, Smena 8M

Digital darkroom

I am shooting to RAW only since 2006. Postprocessig and archiving is done on PC. RAW development is truly "darkroom" of these times. Without verified digital workflow one can spend considerable amount of time with tedious adjustement of posprocessing values.
  • HP Compaq dx7300, Intel Core2 6300 @ 1.86GHz, 2GB RAM, 250GB + 400GB SATA
  • nVidia GeForce 7600 GS 512MB @ 1680x1050
  • LG L226WTQ 22" Wide
  • Microsoft Windows XP
  • Adobe Lightroom
  • Adobe Photoshop
  • Zoner Photo Studio
  • GIMP

Books I recommend

Even though "everything is on the web", I still believe in power of books. Here are some tips for vacation reading on next holiday :)
  • Bryan Peterson: Understanding Exposure: How to Shoot Great Photographs With a Film or Digital Camera
  • Bryan Peterson: Learning to See Creatively: Design, Color & Composition in Photography
  • Bryan Peterson: Beyond portraiture: Creative People Photography
  • Lee Frost: The Photographers's Guide to Filters
  • Robert Thompson: Close Up and Macro Photography: A Photographer's Guide
  • Guy Edwardes: 100 Ways to Take Better Landscape Photographs
  • Peter Krogh: The DAM Book

Technical features of this photoblog

This photoblog is based of open source gpl system pixelpost.org. During my customization I tweaked it so much that it is hardly compatible with original codebase now. Here are some notes for those who are interested.
  • Slovak version, English version of important image attributes
  • SEO for booth languages
  • Language dependent URL rewriting, nice, usable links for both languages
  • Google Sitemap
  • Antispam solution - captcha
  • Support for RSS and ATOM for both languages (image feed, comment feed)
  • Alternative styles

Monitor Calibration

Next color table enables easy, simplyfied form of monitor calibration. Adjust brightnes and contras of your monitor to recognize all levels of grays. Table sides are the most important parts. Decrease the brightnes in the case bright areas are blended. Increase the brightnes if dark areas are blended.

Next pages are good starting point for much serious monitor calibration:
